About Leaning Tower of Pisa
Construction on this bell tower for Pisa Cathedral began in 1173 on ground too soft to support it, and it started tilting after only three of its eight stories were built. Wars repeatedly halted work, stretching construction across nearly two centuries; builders compensated for the lean by making upper floors slightly taller on one side, giving the tower a faint banana-like curve. By 1990 the tilt had grown dangerous enough to close it to the public.
